Job Title: Sign Language Interpreter (Student Support)
Location: Alleghany High School
Hours: Up to 29.5 hours per week; Potential for full time in the future
Nature of Work:
The Sign Language Interpreter provides interpreting and communication support services to a designated student who is deaf or hard of hearing, ensuring full access to instruction, classroom activities, and school events. The interpreter facilitates communication between the student, peers, teachers, and staff using American Sign Language (ASL) or other modes of communication as appropriate to the student’s needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide real-time sign language interpretation of classroom instruction, discussions, and activities.
- Interpret school communications including announcements, assemblies, meetings, and extracurricular activities as directed.
- Support communication between the student and teachers, peers, administrators, and other school staff.
- Maintain confidentiality of student information in compliance with FERPA and district policy.
- Adapt interpreting style and register to match the student’s language needs and instructional context.
- Collaborate with the IEP team and related service providers to support access to the curriculum.
- Assist teachers in understanding strategies for effective communication with the student.
- Encourage independence by supporting—not replacing—the student’s own communication.
- Prepare for lessons by reviewing materials and vocabulary as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in interpreting or related field preferred.
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Experience interpreting in educational settings preferred.
